Jay Leno: Comedians Alienate Half of America with Political Bias

According to CinemaDrame news agency, Jay Leno has weighed in on the firing of Stephen Colbert and the cancellation of his CBS Late Show following jokes about the network’s compromise with Donald Trump, claiming that late-night audiences aren’t especially interested in political humor. In an interview with David Trulio, CEO of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, Leno advised comedians to steer clear of politics.

The 75-year-old comedian, reflecting on his tenure as host of The Tonight Show before Jimmy Fallon, says today’s comedians contribute to the nation’s division. Trulio remarks: “I read that someone analyzed your 22 years on The Tonight Show and found that you joked equally about Republicans and Democrats. Was that intentional?”

Leno replies: “I always liked it when I’d get hate mail for the same joke—like, ‘Dear Mr. Leno, you and your two Republican buddies…’ or ‘Mr. Leno, I hope you and your Democrat friends are happy now.’ And I’d think, ‘Great. That’s exactly how it should be—everyone’s included.’” He adds that comedians today often drive division: “Now it’s like you have to please half the audience because you have to state your opinion.”

Leno says he doesn’t “miss” hosting late-night shows: “Now everyone has to know your politics. Once people see you’ve taken a side, it gets tough.”
